The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the mother of the body and skin microbiome!

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the mother of the microbiome of the body and skin!

As I mentioned in previous posts, our ECS has a crucial role for our skin health. The more I read, the more I realize that it is not really possible to talk about skin and skin care without mentioning/taking into account this system. For 10 years, I thought that the microbial diversity of the skin was the most important thing for the skin and this is extremely important.

But... Our skin's ECS is the "mother" of the microbial diversity. Here are two of the main reasons for this claim:

1. Our sebaceous glands have a number of endocannabinoid receptors that are directly responsible for keeping sebum production (quality + quantity) in balance. We know today that one of the main factors for a good/unbalanced microbial diversity is the quantity + quality of the sebum. Hence the function of the ECS is absolutely crucial for this diversity.

2. Our ECS is also directly responsible for the production of AMPs (antimicrobial peptides) in the skin. These molecules (made of protein) are naturally produced by the skin to protect it against pathogens (bad microbes).

There are also more aspects of the skin that are directly linked to ECS function but which have not yet been directly linked to the skin's microbial diversity.

For example, ECS affects the sweat glands' production (quality + quantity) of sweat. This is something that definitely has an impact on the skin's microbial diversity, even if it has not yet been possible to identify exactly how this works. The picture shows how everything is connected.

If we are to save the negative trend of skin inflammation that grows year after year, we must start talking about the whole, lifestyle, the skin's complex ecosystem and above all the skin's ECS, which lays the foundation for healthy skin.

Everything else is secondary. What mainly affects the ECS of the skin (and the body) is:

- Stress
- Sleep
- Food
- Exercise
- Omega 3 and 6
- Bad / good skin care
- Genetics

It is time for a new skin care era and it will be enormously difficult to influence an industry that has worked in one direction for many years. But if we have the customer's skin health as the main focus, then this is the way forward.
